The search of the house turned up nothing. Either Alex Choi was a messy person, or he left in a hurry. Clothes strewn all over the bedroom. Balled up papers everywhere. Different pairs of shoes on the stairs. He packed as fast as he could and left. Who was after him? What if he thought it was only a matter of time before we figured out he had something to do with it.

“You stay here and continue going through the house. Maybe he forgot something. I’m going to talk to his ex-wife. Maybe she knows where he might have gone.”

Zelina’s head bobbed slightly before she followed a tech up the stairs.

The previous Mrs. Choi sat on her front porch as I pulled up in front of her house. I got out and her posture changed. She leaned forward her hands on the railing in front of her like she was ready to run back inside if need be. I held up my badge. Her shoulders relaxed slightly. She didn’t lean back.

“I need to talk to you about your husband.” I walked up the stairs.

“Ex…”

“Right, sorry. Your ex-husband. Are you two still close?”

She rolled her eyes. “Hell no. I see him in the grocery store? I leave my cart, and I walk out. We’re not close. We have no reason to talk to each other because we don’t have any children together. And yet he still calls me.”

“I take it you don’t answer.”

“Of course not.” She leaned back. “What is this about?”

“We’re looking for him. Need to ask him a few questions about a case I’m working. Went to his house and he wasn’t there. Neighbors said he left with a suitcase.”

She laughed. “He doesn’t have the money to go anywhere out of town, let alone out of state.” She stood up. “I’ll write down a few places he has been known to go. She returned with a slip of paper. Some of the places on the paper I recognized.

“Is this about that news anchor being murdered?”

I sighed. “I’m not allowed to discuss an ongoing investigation.”

“So that’s a yes then. I’m not surprised if he did kill her. He was obsessed with her. He wouldn’t watch any other news station. He wrote her letters. She never wrote him back.”

“Do you know why he was obsessed with her?”

She chuckled. “Alex was one of those guys that never got lucky in high school and fifteen years later still couldn’t let it go.”

“I see.”

“He asked her out to a dance or something. I don’t think it was prom, but it was a dance the school was having, and she declined. He thought she had a date, but she turned up at the dance by herself. And that seemed to really piss him off. Like he thought going with him would have been better than going by herself. It was so stupid. He never let it go. It was like he thought if she had said yes then maybe they would still be together, and his life would have turned out differently.
